The Republic of Mauritius is an island nation located on the south western side of the Indian Ocean. Besides the islands of Mauritius, the Republic of Mauritius encompasses islands like Agalega, Rodrigues and St. Brandon. Geographical Location
This volcanic and mountainous island of Mauritius occupies a select location in the Indian Ocean. It is located just north of the Tropic of Capricorn, in latitude 20º south and longitude 57º 35' east of Greenwich. Achieved independence from the UK in the year 1968, this island-state stands on what was once a land bridge between the continents of Asia and Africa, called the Mascarene Archipelago. Mauritius has an extensive coastline of 330 Km.

The population of Mauritius consists of Hindus, Creole, Chinese, Muslims and Europeans. Hence, Mauritius is a blend of diverse cultures and religions. The official language of Mauritius is English - but the most widely used are French and the local dialect, Creole. Most people in Mauritius are bilingual and are equally fluent in English and French. They also speak their native language Hindi, Chinese, Urdu, etc.
The currency of Mauritian is Rupee (Rs.) which is divided into 100 cents (cs). At the latest exchange rate, one Euro is worth about Rs. 30.

The most interesting and captivating tourist destinations in Mauritius are its capital city Port Louis, Curepipe, Pamplemonsses Garden, Black River George, and Ile Anx Cerfs. Port Louis is the lively capital, chief port, and one of the major tourist attractions in Mauritius. Its buzzing nightlife, Natural History Museum, Le Caudan Waterfront, etc. are the most popular attractions of the city. The exotic flavour of English Market in the town of Curepipe is the most appreciable feature.
Curepipe is the industrial hub of Mauritius's tea and model ship building. In addition to its surrounding countryside, the captivating attractions of the city are Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Gardens and gorgeous Pereybere beach. There are several international standard restaurants and pubs also. Giant Victoria fish poison trees, chewing-gum trees, water lilies, golden bamboo, and the 200-year-old Buddha tree, are most interesting attractions of the botanical gardens. The Pereybere beach is the perfect relaxing and recreational area and offers magnificent scenery. It is also an excellent shopping place with ample facilities.
Built in the year 1767, the Pamplemonsses Garden exhibits indigenous species of plants that date back to several decades.
The Black River George is a giant National Park, enveloped in refreshing greenery and containing a variety of natural vegetation.
The beach and lagoon of Ile Anx Cerfs offer great facilities for sunbathing and water sports, and there are many restaurants and souvenir stores also.
